Red Bull

I began to get a bit worried when I saw Jordy with a can of Red Bull.

We were at a youth camp a couple of weeks ago and it was the last day, which is a bit ominous because it’s just before the last night. The guys reportedly had a lot of laughing and fun planned after the service. I had a lot of resting planned but I figured that J.F., Gilles, and D’jbril, the ones who would be “sleeping” with the young people, were going to be chasing teenagers all night—especially those who drank Red Bull.

This Austrian/Thai drink purports to give its user a burst of energy. .Jordy, the young fellow mentioned above, didn’t need any energy bursts. I suspect he’d been born bursting with energy. For him, Red Bull was just overkill.

I don’t see what’s the big deal about this drink anyway. We’ve had energy products like that for a long time; we just call them Folgers and Maxwell House. Now that’s what I call energy drinks. Evidently the Red Bull effect wore off because most of the teenagers were asleep by 3 a.m.

I had my energy drink after I got up the next morning—black and hot.

Red Bull for Adults

It’s funny. When I heard about Red Bull, I thought, “That can’t be good for you.” But, then I read that the caffeine level was only about the same as a cup of coffee. And coffee is definitely good for me.

My wife complains that coffee doesn’t taste good. You don’t drink coffee because it tastes good. You drink coffee because it is good! When you start sipping he first cup in the morning, your hormones wake up and start dancing. The world is definitely a happier place.

The Lord has provided spiritual energy bursts for us too. Did you know that?

“Suddenly, God, your light floods my path, God drives out the darkness. I smash the bands of marauders, I vault the high fences. What a God! His road stretches straight and smooth. Every God-direction is road-tested. Everyone who runs toward him Makes it. (2 Sam. 22: 29-31, The Message)

This kind of energy doesn’t come from a can or a cup though. It comes to those who seek the Lord in faith with all their heart.

” … Christ in you, the hope of glory. We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.” Col. 1:27-29

Are you feeling spiritually lethargic? Do your batteries need a boost? Then stop! Let your motor quit racing. Then slowly turn towards the Lord. How? Look for Him deliberately in His Word, the Bible.

Began to pray like you really believe Someone is really paying attention. Listen to someone teach His Word. Find a book that touches your heart for God. Take on a heavenly assignment to help someone.

You’ll get a “rush” that Red Bull and Starbucks can’t come close to equaling! ____________

Hmmm …

When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to your youth, remember about Algebra.
